A new health centre serving local people in Great Houghton officially opened its doors on Saturday 19 February 2011.

The medical centre provides a brand new modern facility for Dr Neogy and his practice giving them the opportunity to offer more services in the heart of the community.

New facilities and services provided for patients at the Medical Centre include; an ECG Machine, a female GP in accordance with the Accreditation Scheme to provide patients with choice, minor surgery, a Warfarin Clinic, Health Checks, Implanon fitting and removal, a new patient check-in facility and more consultation rooms to accept more patients. The new Medical Centre will also be introducing appointment booking online and prescription booking online.

The Great Houghton Medical Centre was opened by Cllr Dorothy Higginbottom. Dorothy is a well known local resident who works tirelessly in the local community, indeed she saved the NHS a substantial amount of public money by arranging for the welfare hall to be used as temporary premises while the new centre was under construction.

Nick Phillips, Director of Estates and Facilities NHS Barnsley said:
“The new building is a much needed replacement for the previous health centre and will allow the residents of Great Houghton and surrounding areas to be treated in some of the best accommodation available within the NHS.

“The construction of the new centre has been made possible by collaboration between NHS Barnsley and Barnsley Community Solutions who have provided this and many other excellent facilities for the people of Barnsley.”
